Examination by a surgeon

Examination by a surgeon - consultation and manipulation

Suitable for:
Patients with complaints requiring surgical care
Duration
~ 20 - 30 minutes
Preparation
Bring previous tests, epicrises and list of medications taken
Additional services
Surgical manipulations (incisions, wound dressings, sutures, etc.)

The surgical examination at Reflex Medical Center focuses on the evaluation of conditions that require surgical attention - wounds and trauma, local inflammation and cysts, suspected hernias and other soft tissue problems. During the consultation, the surgeon assesses whether conservative treatment and observation is sufficient or whether any manipulation or hospitalization for surgical treatment is necessary.

With what symptoms and conditions to book an appointment with a surgeon?

  • Pain, bump or „ball“ under the skin (cyst, lipoma, etc.)
  • Suspicion of hernia (protrusion in the abdomen, groin, etc.)
  • Red, painful areas on the skin, local inflammation or abscess
  • Wounds after trauma, cut, bite, burn (for evaluation and treatment)
  • Stitches to be removed or control of wound healing
  • Prolonged pain in a specific area accompanied by swelling
  • Skin or subcutaneous changes that bother you (fast-growing growth, color change, easy bleeding)
  • Pain and swelling of the finger around the nail plate
  • The need for a surgical consultation before a planned procedure or on the recommendation of another doctor

If you are unsure whether your problem requires surgical intervention, you can book an appointment for a consultation - better a timely assessment than procrastination at potential risk.

How is the examination by surgeon performed?

Conversation and clarification of complaints
The surgeon will ask you questions about the onset and development of the problem - how long has it been, how is it changing, is there pain, redness, temperature, previous surgeries and accompanying diseases.

Physical examination
Next is an examination of the affected area - inspection, examination, assessment of size, mobility, redness, pain, etc. If necessary, adjacent areas may also be examined for concomitant changes.

Assessment for further studies
If necessary, the surgeon may recommend additional tests - blood tests, imaging or consultation with another specialist. All of this is discussed with you.

Diagnosis and action plan
Finally, the likely diagnosis is summarized and a treatment plan is recommended.

Common reasons to see a surgeon

What conditions are most commonly evaluated and treated?

  • Skin and subcutaneous growths - cysts, lipomas („fat balls“), fibroids, etc.
  • Local inflammation and abscesses - red, painful and swollen areas
  • Cut wounds, lacerations and contusions, animal and insect bites.
  • Burns (milder degrees) - initial assessment and care
  • Suspected hernia - for assessment and referral
  • Follow-up examinations after an already performed surgical intervention
  • Dressings, suture removal and assessment of the healing process

When you need to urgently look for a doctor

Symptoms in which an examination should not be postponed:

  • Severe, sudden abdominal pain that intensifies
  • High fever, chills and malaise, especially with local redness and swelling
  • Rapidly increasing bump, very painful to touch
  • Severe bleeding that does not stop with squeezing
  • Severe trauma, fall from height, impact with great force
  • Sudden worsening of the condition after an already diagnosed problem

With some of these symptoms, help may be needed in a hospital or emergency room. If the condition is severe or rapidly deteriorating, do not wait an hour for a check-up - call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department!

Frequently Asked Question

Can you do a little surgical manipulation on the spot for me?
In many cases yes, for smaller skin and subcutaneous growths, abscesses, wounds and other conditions that are suitable for outpatient treatment. Following the examination, the surgeon will assess whether it is safe and appropriate to perform the manipulation on an outpatient basis or whether referral to hospital is more appropriate.
Is preparation necessary before a surgical examination?
No special preparation is needed for a standard examination. If you have previous examinations, epicrises or imaging test results, it is good to bring them. If you are taking medications for chronic diseases or blood-thinning medications, it is necessary to mention them at the beginning of the examination.
Are outpatient manipulations painful?
Local anaesthesia is used when necessary, so most of the manipulations are non-painful. The doctor explains in advance what is going to happen and what you may feel to put your mind at ease.
How long does it take to recover after a minor manipulation?
It depends on the type and extent of manipulation. In most cases, you can return to your daily activities the same day or the next day, but with certain restrictions - keep the place dry, clean and follow the instructions given. You will be given specific recommendations at your examination.
Do you work with patients on the national health insurance?
No, we do not currently work with the health fund.
